How To Buy Camera Cases For Your Cameras And Camcorders

Camera cases have been around for about as long as there have been cameras.  Some of the early cases were just simple bags, while others were sturdy, heavy boxes.  To choose a modern case for your camera, ask yourself some basic questions before you buy.

1.  What kind of camera are you going to carry in the camera cases?  Some digital cameras are very compact and only require a very small case.  Other cameras are larger; you will need to find a size of case that will accommodate them.  Camcorders are usually carried in special camera cases designed specifically for them.

2.  What kinds of pockets and compartments do you need?  If you have a digital camera of any kind, you will need pockets for your memory cards and batteries.  For a 35mm camera, or one that has both film and digital, you will probably need places to store film, extra lenses, and batteries.  Camcorders have their own accessories as well.

Look for camera cases that have just the right number of pockets or compartments to do the job.  If all you have is a small digital camera, you do not need a case with four or more compartments.  You will just find yourself cluttering up your case with unneeded items.  It is better to stick with what you need.

3.  How do you want to carry your camera case?  You can find camera cases with long straps for shoulder carry or short straps to carry in your hand.  Some cases will cinch around your waist.  Others have a carbiner lock clasp to hold them to your belt loop or backpack straps. Think about the most comfortable position to carry your size of camera.

4.  Of what type of material do you want your camera case to be constructed?  Nylon is popular, and comes in several varieties.  Nylon twill, nylon jacquard, and nylon polyester blends are all used for camera cases.  Neoprene is the choice of some modern camera owners.  Water repellence is also a plus.

5.  What type of lining and padding do you expect in your camera case?  Some camera cases have soft removable inner linings so that you can clean them more easily.  Some have scratch-resistant linings.  If you have an expensive camera, especially a heavy one, look for camera cases with foam padding.

6.  What type of closing or lid do you want your camera case to have?  Some are simple zippered cases.  These are great for small digital cameras.  For a larger camera or a camcorder, you might want a lid that has some shape and structure.  It might have clasps that hold it shut as well as the zipper.

When you have found the answers to all your questions, you should know which camera cases will meet your requirements.  Then, you can compare on colors, styles, and price points.  It only takes a little time to find the right case to do the job.
